When we talk about automatisms (also called "automatic reactions"), we speak of certain physical, psychic and mental actions carried out in a repetitive and absent manner, which deprive the existence of the added value from experience. Generally we talk about automatisms related to the physical plane like talking, gesticulating, walking, washing, driving, running, dressing… Understanding the functioning of these physical automatisms will make it easier to study and understand psychic automatisms, those related to behavioral attitudes such as anger, envy, lust, indolence, pride, fear, apathy...To learn about the anatomy of automatisms, the first step is to be aware of the existing game between the conscious and the subconscious. A practical example: learning to ride a bicycle requires first passing through the conscious part, then through the subconscious part to finally arrive at the automatism. The first attempts in the saddle will not be automatic because we first have to go through the learning process and then we need the conscious part to be careful and memorize the information we need. Then, repeating what we have learned and always using the conscious part, we sow the field of the subconscious. After sowing information in the subconscious and after these seeds have taken root, the information will begin to rise on its own, spontaneously on the surface, like a plant growing out of a seed planted in the earth. Here, the action of the subconscious begins. The conscious part, however, should not fall asleep, on the contrary it should be exercised to control the direction that takes what comes from the subconscious. We think of a tree, we can guide its future in the direction we want, using various sticks to make it grow straight, pruning to shape it and so on. The problem is that most humans forget that they have responsibility for the conscious part's exercise to control what comes from the subconscious. Going back to our analogy, it is as if, having trimmed the sapling, we no longer took care of its growth and let its branches grow at random, causing damage. In the case of human beings, the absolute lack of control makes it a robot. So, once you learn how to ride a bike, the conscious part will rarely be needed, for example when we want to change the way we pedal.
Otherwise, the psychic automatisms linked to this action will take place spontaneously, automatically, without the intervention of the conscious party to pedal or keep in balance. It goes without saying that the same mechanism can be transposed into any other field of our existence: that of writing, reading, work, relationships. At this point you can see the automatisms. When we want to ride a bike, it is enough to ride in the saddle and the bike goes by itself, we no longer have to pay attention to coordinating pedaling with maintaining balance. If we want to paint, the brush goes alone, we no longer have to be careful to learn how to hold it and how to move it. This process of the creation of automatisms is realized spontaneously, almost by itself and throughout its existence the human being continues to assimilate many and different types, linked to most of the stimuli he encounters in his perceptive field. The various types of automatisms are activated spontaneously according to the experiences that are made, in the presence of an element-stimulus. People generally behave as if they were not present, as if they were daydreaming while doing other activities. Exactly the same mechanisms are implemented in behavioral automatisms such as sadness, apathy, hatred, jealousy, anger, etc. Once we have sown the field with these emotions, they will be automatically manifested by us whenever the circumstances offer us the appropriate stimuli. For example, if as a teenager we suffered a disappointment in love because the partner abandoned us and we associated the episode with a characteristic reasoning of jealousy that tells us that the other is unfaithful, he does not deserve to be loved and we must defend ourselves in some way, in order not to suffer, then, through the constant repetition of this reasoning, we will sow this idea in the subconscious, where it will take root and become an automatism that will manifest itself spontaneously whenever the circumstances and stimuli urge it. Practically, through our life in society, through constant interaction with the members of society and through the mimetic tendency we have towards society, we constantly create automatisms through which we manifest ourselves.
For example, we only love those who praise us and want us to do well or stay bad when we are not given value. I cannot help but notice in this regard the greatness of Jesus when he said: "Love your enemies. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?” With these words Jesus, the Supreme Divine Model, indicated not only the way of love, but also the way of wisdom, a way to heal souls coming out of automatisms. A way to become alive, to move from robotic, dead, to human behavior, alive. So, let's create automatisms by copying them from the company (gift only to someone who gives me something, I help only those who help me, I speak only to those who speak to me, I greet only those who greet me, I love only those who love me, etc.). They are specific automatisms of joy or pain and through their unconscious repetition, specific automatisms will be formed and consolidated for most of the situations we live. Every time we encounter the same situations we become like robots and act mechanically, without taking into account the fact that, even if two situations are similar, it does not mean that the results are also similar. It is like sailing in the ocean without the rudder, we go where the waves direct us. In this way, for example, when someone complains about us, the automatism of anger is manifested. Then, if someone comes and gives us reason, the automatism of love is manifested. Then, if the partner does not consider us, the automatism of sadness starts. And then again, if a person we respected doesn't behave according to our expectations, the automatism of disappointment starts. In these conditions, our life is no longer lived by us, but is entirely controlled by the situations that trigger the automatisms. And so we arrive at the contemporary drama: live permanently projected into the past, ignoring the present. Every situation we face will be experienced by us through the prism of experiences and above all past experiences, without any further possibility of change or improvement. We do not put forth a conscious effort to adapt to the present and this lack of adaptation is affected from within, so we suffer. Whatcan we do? We begin to allow ourselves the luxury of thinking consciously. We need a greater presence of the conscious part, this must be exercised in order to analyze clearly every single circumstance in which we find ourselves. The conscious part must always play the role of referee who decides whether to let the game go ahead (automatism) or stop it to grant a penalty (take a different, unusual decision, because the situation requires it). The conscious part has this immense strength which, unfortunately, it does not use. The conscious part must always be called upon to decide whether to let the automatisms manifest or not, and can do so only if kept constantly in a state of "alert". We can then practice as often as possible to keep the conscious party awake. How? For example, simply by changing the daily routine. If you analyze yourself carefully, you will notice that you follow your routine almost maniacally: you get out of bed almost always in the same way, follow the morning ritual always in the same way and in the same order (going to the bathroom, washing, dressing, having breakfast ...).
We could then start by changing the order and the way we perform these actions. For example, reverse the order in which you usually brush your teeth and take a shower, reverse the order in which you usually eat breakfast and dress. Then often change the hand with which you brush your teeth, change the hand you eat with (this will allow you to activate both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously). Then, you can still change the way you usually go to work; you can change the means of transport you usually use. All these devices will ensure that the old system of beliefs, become automatisms, collapses and that you are born again and live the present moment more, and therefore happiness. This way of acting will bring you to another type of automatism, this time beneficial: the automatism of being conscious.
It is a useful automatism to understand if the reasoning you do is right or wrong, if it produces joy or pain and consequently will provide you with the methods to act in a certain direction. If, through the constant use of the conscious part, we can identify a defect of reasoning, then we can also modify that reasoning and bring a quality plus in life. To do this, we need to use conscious attention and therefore a conscious effort to correct the wrong reasoning in our psyche. But be careful, it is not enough to act only once in a while in this direction, but we must constantly repeat this awareness until the wrong reasoning (provocateur of suffering) will be completely eradicated and replaced with a right one (provocateur of happiness). To do this, we have at our disposal a weapon made up of three elements: thinking, wanting, acting. To this we add a fourth element: repeating everything as constantly. This is how we become the makers of our own destiny, a conscious destiny.
