Each of us, at least once in a lifetime, found himself in a "toxic" environment or in the presence of "toxic" people. I use the term "toxic" because the effect felt in certain situations is real toxicity, profound mental, psychic pollution and finally, as a consequence of the first two, physical. In other words, the person who enters a "toxic" environment or who has to deal with "toxic" people, will feel dirty, polluted, confused, tired, energetically worn out and physically exhausted. The bad thing is that the world is full of certain environments and above all it is full of "toxic", deeply polluting people; the beauty is that we can learn to recognize them to avoid them or protect ourselves.
I refer here mainly to "toxic" people, often referred to as "negative people", even if it is not the person himself who is negative, but rather his/her actions and habits. The main rule in these cases is to avoid these people, if possible, but unfortunately this rule is not always applicable. Whether we like it or not, sometimes we are forced to interact with family, friends, colleagues or bosses and many of them radiate with negative energy. So what are we going to do about that?
Let's start by identifying some characteristics of the "toxic" or "negative" person. • The negative person always sees the empty part of the glass, even if it is 1% of the total volume, but sees just that.
• The negative person always has an excuse ready, rarely presents himself with a success or a solution.
• The negative person is incapable of listening to the other; when you speak it interrupts you and overlaps you by starting a completely different conversation with respect to yours; behaves as if it were the sole protagonist of the conversation; on the phone, dialogue turns into a monologue: his own. And you will come out of it very upset.
• The negative person manifests either a visible and exaggerated pessimism or a false and apparent humble optimism. When you meet him, either he immediately begins to complain and keep it up all the time, or manifests an excessive optimism, reacting to everything you say with a: "but come on, that life is beautiful! Look at the beautiful sun today! And that will never be! " and then, immediately after, behind you: "wow that guy is really messed up!"
• When he makes love, the negative person is "elsewhere". He begins to think about the resistance and composition of the condom, the light, too strong or too dim, the alleged dust on the sheet, what he will tell his parents when he returns home (even if he has exceeded 30!), about what he will wear the next morning, the volume of the music, too high or too low, the dinner that has not yet been done, etc. In short, anything that prevents him from entering into the love experience, managing to ruin it for you too.
• The negative person refuses any interesting proposal with a dry "NO"; he will always tell you that there are no prerequisites and he will list all the negative aspects of that proposal, making you feel castrated, with wings cut clean when you feel you can take flight from the highest peaks.
• The negative person has the particular gift of making you feel unhappy, sad, dull, suffocated, exhausted every time you meet him/her.
• The negative person is always ready to criticize everything and everyone (this is one of his most noticeable features); finds fault with anyone but himself: everyone is wrong, he never is; always gives advice, even in fields that he’s not familiar with it or when he completely ignores the situation.
• The negative person always considers and defines others as evil, selfish, jealous, incapable, while in reality he is the one who manifests these characteristics, he is in fact an inwardly cold person who expresses a cold judgment. It only warms up against those who care in some way.
• The negative person has a strong influence on you: his mere presence suffices to influence you negatively.
• The negative person always requires your attention, either through complaints or through imposition, it is certain that after having obtained it you enter a bizarre state of trance and feel how gradually life flows away from you.
What can you do about it?
Meanwhile, begin by becoming aware that you must learn to give up the fatalistic attitude. You are not a martyr. You are not obliged to carry weights on your shoulders that are not yours. Ah, another thing: you are not the savior of the world or of anyone. If someone has to be saved by something, that's you, by yourself. In modern man there is the perverse desire to help others indiscriminately and at all costs, when, in reality, not only is he himself still in need of help, but he does not even have the means to help others. This perverse desire originates in the ego and has the real purpose of self-importance. The result is to work in vain to help people unable to benefit from this aid and to make it fruitful. The second thing you can do is to become aware of the effect a negative person has on you and decide to do something to change the situation. In this regard it is good that you understand that the negative person exercises power over you only if you grant him that power. He gets fed by your visible reactions, so it's good that you learn to shield yourself and not show that his words influence you in any way. Then don't show yourself angry because of what he says or how he behaves, don't show sadness, disappointment, sorrow, unease, regret. Instead show a detached, distant, superior attitude. Always keep calm and interiorly evoke a state of joy. Always remember: you have nothing to do with what a negative person says or does. The wickedness and the cruel words, the anger and the selfishness of the negative person are only the expression of his unhappiness, of his frustrations, of his opacity, his cold heart and his toxicity. This should in no way have a negative impact on you.
Finally, decide to stop orbiting in the negative trajectory of these people, remember that this decision belongs to you and that, in the end, it's all a question of resonance. Keep in mind that toxic people have the habit of polluting everything around them and that it is also your job to contribute to the cleaning work. Start with you. Stop being pessimistic and hanging out with pessimistic people. Become positive. You can! Do it right away! Don't wait for tomorrow or next week! Get out in the open air and walk. You can do it by yourself, you don't need company. Listen to beautiful music, possibly classic or instrumental (beautiful music has a profoundly positive and rejuvenating effect on all our systems). Decide to be of help to those who really need and know how to use your help, give a hand to a friend in need or to a neighbor (attention: it must not belong to the category of negative people), engaged in collective activities useful to others. Enroll in a Yoga course and practice postures and meditation daily. Learn to smile with your lips and above all imagine always smiling with your heart. This will make you and those around you feel good.
